A co-admin’s 2cents (Kristin): Every month, I make a playlist of my favorite songs. Choosing top albums is a very different exercise. To me, an album should be a comprehensive moment in history; a chance for an artist to take us into their world. For this reason, there are certain artists who deserve the best album title, and others who don’t. I also enjoy slightly more melodic music. Here are a few that didn’t land on Murf’s list.
Starting off with Guineafowl’s EP “Hello Anxiety” from Sydney, Australia. The first song draws you in with its anthem-like chorus, and the ensuing songs rise and fall, like a good short story. The album is awash with color, the lyrics are a call to action to join him in rejecting the BS of jaded adulthood. Currently touring with Foster the People in Australia
Saw Lykke Li tonight at Webster Hall. She kinda looks like a feminine version of Gaga, but has a dark side of her - that must be the Swedish influence. She even played a snippet of th Knife’s Silent Shout into her Kleerup song. Most of the crowd were very small girls, and very tall guys. A lot of cameras were out and videoing. I got a few in, but the smoke on stage made pix pretty difficult. Overall, she has graduated into her sophomore album, leaving the naiivity behind of her soft voice. She has obviously become very comfortable on stage, but there are still hints of the vulnerability in her younger days.
